What you will study

First year

A typical first year may include:

a core topic in wines of the world, accredited to WSET Level 2 Award in Wines, covering environmental factors, grape-growing, winemaking and maturation options, grape varieties and geographical locations around the world.
a core topic in the business of growing grapes where you will learn how to taste and describe wine and spirits in the sensory lab.
core topics in innovation and creative thinking and the legal framework around wine and spirits businesses
core topic in accounting for managers including computational and decision-making techniques covering data, statistics probability, sampling and hypothesis testing.
core topic in economics for business studying markets and consumer behaviour.
a selection of elective topics.

Second year

A typical second year may include:

core topics in the business of making wine, advanced sensory class in wine evaluation, rating and pricing, using the sensory lab, and developing an international wine and spirits brand.
core topics in import-export theory and practice, supply chain management, wine and spirits in a digital world, and successful wine tourism strategies.
a selection of elective topics.

Third year

A typical third year may include:

core topics in selling wine and spirits, the future of work in the digital age, strategic management, and wine tourism.
an opportunity for Australian and international study tours.

Prior to your industry placement or study tour, you will be required to complete and supply the following:

Driver’s licence (required for most industry placements).

Study abroad

There are opportunities to take your studies overseas with work integrated and wine and spirits focused study tours in another country, including elective topic study tours such as the

Prowein Trade Fair in Germany in March 2021 (SB Pro Wein)
Vin Italy in Italy in April 2021
Vin Expo in Hong Kong.

There are also opportunities to visit businesses within Australia, and field trips to vineyards and distilleries in South Australia, including the McLaren Vale, the Barossa and Clare Valley, providing a unique opportunity to see discuss strategic objectives with industry firsthand.

If you don’t meet our English language entry requirements and need to improve your English language proficiency, you can do so through Flinders University Academy – or our approved English Language Instruction Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) providers.
